How long does skincare take to work? A realistic timeline

By The regimen team · June 24, 2026 · 1 min read

The single biggest reason people quit skincare is impatience. Skin cells turn over on roughly a 28-day cycle (slower as you age), so meaningful change takes weeks to months, not days.

A rough timeline

  • Hydration / barrier products: days to 1–2 weeks
  • Exfoliating acids (texture, glow): 2–4 weeks
  • Acne treatments: 6–12 weeks (and often a purge first)
  • Retinoids (texture, fine lines): 8–12 weeks for texture; several months for lines
  • Dark spots / hyperpigmentation: 8–12+ weeks, and only with daily SPF

Consistency beats intensity

A tolerable routine you actually stick to for three months beats an aggressive one you quit in two weeks. Resist the urge to keep switching products — give each change at least 6–8 weeks before judging.

Track it so you can see progress

Slow change is hard to notice day to day, which makes it easy to give up too early. regimen lets you log check-ins and a progress journal so you can look back over weeks and actually see what changed — and tie it to the routine you were running.

FAQ

Why isn’t my skincare working after a week?

A week is too soon for most actives. Give new products 6–8 weeks of consistent use before deciding.

Is purging normal?

With acids and retinoids, a temporary increase in breakouts in your usual problem areas can be normal for the first few weeks.
