Morning vs night skincare routine: what goes where

By The regimen team · June 24, 2026 · 1 min read

A complete routine isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing the right things at the right time of day. Some ingredients protect (morning), others renew (night).

What goes in the morning

Morning skincare is about protection from sun and free-radical damage:

  • Gentle cleanser (or just water if your skin is dry)
  • An antioxidant — vitamin C is the classic morning serum
  • Moisturiser
  • Sunscreen, always last — see our full sunscreen guide

What goes at night

Night skincare is about repair. This is when active treatments work:

  • Cleanser (double cleanse if you wore sunscreen or makeup)
  • One treatment — your retinoid or an exfoliating acid, not both in one night
  • Moisturiser to seal everything in

The rule that ties it together

Within each routine, apply thinnest to thickest, and don’t double up clashing actives — our conflict checker flags those as you build. New to this? Start with building a routine from scratch.

FAQ

Should I use vitamin C in the morning or at night?

Morning is ideal — its antioxidant protection complements sunscreen. But it works at night too if you prefer.

Can I use retinol in the morning?

It’s best at night, since it can increase sun sensitivity and some forms degrade in light. Pair it with daily SPF.
