How to build a skincare routine from scratch

By The regimen team · June 24, 2026 · 1 min read

You don't need ten steps. A good routine starts with three essentials and grows slowly.

The three essentials

  1. Cleanser — gentle, non-stripping.
  2. Moisturiser — supports your barrier.
  3. Sunscreen (AM) — the single most effective anti-aging and anti-pigment product there is.

If you do nothing else, do these. Everything else is optional.

Add one active at a time

Once the basics are habit, add a treatment matched to your main concern:

Introduce one new active every couple of weeks so you can tell what's working — and what's irritating.

Let it check itself

The fastest way to a routine that works is to build it and have the conflicts caught for you. regimen's routine builder flags ingredient clashes and layering mistakes as you go, and our "Build for me" feature can generate a conflict-free starter routine for your skin type in one click. FAQ

What’s the minimum effective skincare routine?

Cleanser, moisturiser, and daily sunscreen. Add one active for your main concern once those are consistent.

How many products do I need?

Three to five is plenty for most people. More products mean more chances for conflicts and irritation.
